The system does not hang completely but is unresponsive to all input. Ssh is not an option here seeing network service never gets fully initiated. This could be an issue with networking itself as loading the b44 module stalls the boot for 20~25 seconds. I'll post a separate bug report for that. Booting with the Xen kernel and using 'init 3' as option results in the same black screen and still leaves me forced to hard power off the laptop. Booting with the normal kernel option boots fine. I'll try to get some relevant logs by booting with a LiveCD after the hangup... I'm now booted with the Xen kernel and running GNOME using then xorg.conf.install with the modified Screen "Screen[vesa]". Find the report here: bug 376034 The relation seems to pointing to problems with the gnome-settings-daemon environment. I was getting some strange window behavior and a bug buddy error once popped up when logging in. As a test I changed from the default GNOME theme to the Industrial theme and rebooted. I am now writing this with 3D desktop enabled and with the Xen kernel loaded and using the normal xorg.conf with intel driver.
