After further booting and experimenting I've found that booting 2.6.34rc3 with radeon.modeset=0 that without xorg.conf X brightness is normal,
Great. So 24bit color depth default works meanwhile in UMS mode.
but with xorg.conf it's too dim as in comment 0.
16bit color depth is *not* the driver's default.
Booting with radeon.modeset=1 or without any radeon.modeset* causes lockup trying to start X with or without xorg.conf. PC speaker beeps immediately on startx or init 5 causing lockup.
Will be documented how to disable KMS in the Release Notes (Bug #595569).
Booting 2.6.34rc3 takes extraordinarily long unless cmdline includes radeon.modeset=0. Last line on tty1 during long long long init pause is " udevd-work[512]: '/usr/bin/vmmouse_detect' unexpected exit with status 0x000b".
