Toggling to on and back to off does not make a difference, nor does creating a new ~/Desktop directory -- the original one I had removed at one point, but in any case my expectation is that with this option set to false, either ~/Desktop will be shown, or if that does not exist, the desktop will remain empty. Right now ~/Desktop does exist, the option is set to false, and still I do find my homedir on the desktop. Playing a bit further, I see that /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop allows me to remove all items. Create new account, put some dummy files into $HOME 1. Log in and experience the desktop as expected (mostly empty) 2. rmdir $HOME/Desktop 3. Log out, log in and notice that suddenly $HOME appears on the desktop 4. mkdir $HOME/Desktop 5. Log out, log in and notice that $HOME still appears on the desktop The problem here is twofold: first, when a user removes that "strange and empty anyway" Desktop directory, out of the blue $HOME is shown. Second, even when someone creates the Desktop directory again, $HOME is still shown. What's happening is that xdg-user-dirs-update sees that ~/Desktop/ doesn't exist anymore and change the value in ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs to ~/ (check your ~/.xsession-errors). The small bug there is that the gconf key description should probably mention that when it's not set to TRUE, ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs wins. Not likely, you have already upgraded to newer versions of openSUSE, which had a lot more bug fixes.
