[Bug 670191] New: Show the encryption mode in partitioner
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=670191 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=670191#c0 Summary: Show the encryption mode in partitioner Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Milestone 6 of 6 Platform: Other OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Minor Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: bluedzins@wp.pl QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Opera/9.80 (Windows NT 6.1; U; en) Presto/2.7.62 Version/11.00 This report is for opensuse 11.4, not 11.3, but there was no such on the list. When you are about to enter the password for your account during installation you will see the method used for encryption of this password with ability to even change the method. However when you would like to encrypt a partition, you have ability to encrypt it. No information is given. Is is 255 XOR, is it DES? AES? What kind? Hash length? Nothing. Security by obscurity is not a security, so please show user what do you mean by "encrypting" partition. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Run a test install of opensuse 11.4 2. Choose manual partition 3. Select "encrypt" partition Actual Results: Checkbox is turned on, but no info about encryption method is presented. Expected Results: There should be info (and desirable) way to even change the method of encryption. Compare this to Debian or Arch installers. I don't think it is a bug, but is major (anyway) omission. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

--- Comment #2 from Maciej Pilichowski
The value is in no way obscure,
It is. It is hidden, isn't it?
but can trivially be seen by the command "cryptsetup status ..."
I am relieved I don't have to check the sources. So, if it is so trivial, then maybe, maybe... it is worth to put it on screen, for good measure, to know that in opensuse 11.6 there will be a regression (wontfix, I know) and luks will default to XOR 255. So I would know, that the default encryption is no longer an encryption.
In the last years the default encryption method changed multiple times, therefore I would prefer to avoid putting this into the user interface
So it is better to suggest to user nothing was changed? "THE encryption".
having to potentially check every new cryptsetup package for a changed default encryption method.
It was trivial, remember? I put this in reverse -- are there ANY benefits from hiding this info from user who installs the system? -- And personal note, answer just to yourself -- what happened to developer's pride? Write a software and don't care anymore? This is the way things go now? As a developer myself I am ashamed we fall in the same category. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
