[Bug 534816] New: During each boot the systemclock is set wrongly (difference of -2 hrs)
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=534816 Summary: During each boot the systemclock is set wrongly (difference of -2 hrs) Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Factory Platform: i686 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: tittiatcoke@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.2) Gecko/20090730 SUSE/3.5.2-3.1 Firefox/3.5.2 Since already sometime I have the effect that after each boot the system time was set wrongly. It should be e.g. 7pm, but the system would show the time as 5pm. I set the time correctly (even with NTP), but after a reboot the system time has again the same difference of minus 2 hrs. If i do not set the clock correctly and reboot the system, then the difference is suddenly minus 4 hrs (so every boot add minus two hours). After some investigations it seems that the cause is in the boot.clock initscript. During the start of this script the parameter -systz is used for a command inside the startup routine. Once this parameter is removed, everything works as expected and the system time is set correctly with every boot. I do not know what the purpose is of the -systz parameter, but I believe that it might have to do with setting the clock according to the system timezone. Despite that my system is set to localtime (including hw clock), the -systz seems to fall back to GMT. (At least this is the only explanation that I can find) Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Strangely, it appears to work ok after running mkinitrd and rebooting. This was a fresh install yesterday and contains no updates.
Just a question. Did you "only" reboot or did you also try shutting down the machine and then starting it again. The reason why I am asking is, that on "reboot" anything is fine for my installation, while on "halt" and then starting the machine again, the problem reoccurs. See also some references from forums.opensuse.org http://forums.opensuse.org/pre-release-beta/421909-read-only-filesystem.html http://forums.opensuse.org/pre-release-beta/421916-m7-asus-laptops-a7k-esp.h... Unfortunatley, the whole thing seems to behave not very "reproducable", my system clock is set to UTC and rebuilding initrd did not help when shtuting down and starting the machine, while there was no problem on running "reboot". As reported by "malcolmlewis", the "initrd-trick" did solve his issue, however, he is using "localtime" and the remark on removing ata_piix looks unrelated to me. In fact, on my installation (which is only a VM, so not really a good base for a decent bug report) ata_piix is not only found (on i586, so I don't get that error) but also needed for the virtual HD, so I certainly can't remove it. What I found out to be reproducible: - If you reboot the clock does not get set to a "wrong" time (in my case 2h in the future) - If you halt the machine and then start it again, the clock always gets set to the wrong time (+2 h in the future) If the user has any mechanism to set the time automatically (ntp or with VirtualBox there is a /etc/init.d/vboxadd-timesync, which syncs the guest to the host´ s time) trouble will start. As said before, this is only a VM installation, but as you (and maybe other users in the linked threads) have this problem also on "real hardware", still this information might be of some use. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
