[Bug 331778] New: fdisk problem with large disk "No free sectors available"
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=331778 Summary: fdisk problem with large disk "No free sectors available" Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: 32bit OS/Version: openSUSE 10.2 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: reitenbach@rapideye.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Customer I remved a large partition, on a large disk, created a new one, half the size, and then wanted to create another new one from the rest of free space on the disk, after hitting n for new partition, fdisk stated "No free sectors available". the the fdisk log below. Then I tried cfdisk, and cfdisk had no problem to create the partitions. expected behaviour: ordinary fdisk should be able to do the same as cfdisk: ogo:/var/log # fdisk /dev/sdc The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 218834. There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024, and could in certain setups cause problems with: 1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO) 2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK) Command (m for help): p Disk /dev/sdc: 1799.9 GB, 1799977172992 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 218834 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdc1 1 1217 9775521 83 Linux /dev/sdc2 1218 37691 292977405 83 Linux /dev/sdc3 37692 98480 488287642+ 83 Linux /dev/sdc4 98481 218834 966743505 5 Extended /dev/sdc5 98481 122796 195318238+ 83 Linux /dev/sdc6 122797 218834 771425203+ 83 Linux Command (m for help): d Partition number (1-6): 6 Command (m for help): n First cylinder (122797-218834, default 122797): Using default value 122797 Last cylinder or +size or +sizeM or +sizeK (122797-218834, default 218834): 170815 Command (m for help): p Disk /dev/sdc: 1799.9 GB, 1799977172992 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 218834 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdc1 1 1217 9775521 83 Linux /dev/sdc2 1218 37691 292977405 83 Linux /dev/sdc3 37692 98480 488287642+ 83 Linux /dev/sdc4 98481 218834 966743505 5 Extended /dev/sdc5 98481 122796 195318238+ 83 Linux /dev/sdc6 122797 170815 385712586 83 Linux Command (m for help): n No free sectors available Command (m for help): d Partition number (1-6): 6 Command (m for help): n First cylinder (122797-218834, default 122797): Using default value 122797 Last cylinder or +size or +sizeM or +sizeK (122797-218834, default 218834): Using default value 218834 Command (m for help): p Disk /dev/sdc: 1799.9 GB, 1799977172992 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 218834 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdc1 1 1217 9775521 83 Linux /dev/sdc2 1218 37691 292977405 83 Linux /dev/sdc3 37692 98480 488287642+ 83 Linux /dev/sdc4 98481 218834 966743505 5 Extended /dev/sdc5 98481 122796 195318238+ 83 Linux /dev/sdc6 122797 218834 771425203+ 83 Linux Command (m for help): here fdisk after the creation of the partition with cfdisk: ogo:/var/log # fdisk /dev/sdc The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 218834.
