[Bug 397097] New: installing 11.0 RC1 x86 under x86_64 fails ...
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=397097 Summary: installing 11.0 RC1 x86 under x86_64 fails ... Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Factory Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Xen AssignedTo: cgriffin@novell.com ReportedBy: mmeeks@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- I try to install an RC1 DVD ISO into a new Xen image (created using the yast2 tool), under factory. The kernel boots, gets past "loading basic drivers", then pops up a red ncurses dialog: "Could not find the openSUSE Repository." "Activating manual setup program". I try to continue onwards, but the keyboard 'enter' key becomes unresponsive, the TightVNC X window refreshes extremely/impossibly slowly & so on - when I get to an entry field in the GUI I discover my keyboard enters only gibberish (it seems) ;-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

GUI? Do mean a curses text field or has the install proceeded into the GUI?

Yes the fix is needed in the guest kernel. The patch has been committed for RC2/GM this morning.
will re-test with GM.
Where you installing PV or HVM openSuSE guest? Was this a pure ISO install or was there a network repository specified?
no Vx extension on this machine, so PV. It was a pure ISO install from a local disk - so it seems unlikely on the face of it that it would be a network issue but .. ;_)
How did you "try" to continue onwards? GUI? Do mean a curses text field or has the install proceeded into the GUI?
oh, it's the standard mini-ISO type install ncurses GUI; I hit enter for 'Ok', and tried to continue a little way: with rather limited success. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Looks like we both have to wait for RC2 or GM :-(
By the way, my testing was done with RC2. Until proven otherwise, I think we need to assume that this is a guest-side error, which means that the fix would have to be put into the installation source (not in an update), which means that this needs to be fixed before we ship. Raising severity accordingly. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Does this only occur with 64-bit hv/dom0? Has it been tried with 64-bit hv and 32-bit dom0?
I hadn't tried this combination, but I can't even get the 32-bit dom0 / 64-bit hypervisor to boot (see bug #398129). As an aside, with the 32-bit dom0 / 32-bit hypervisor, I did not encounter any problems installing the pv guest from ISO.
Just to be certain - does this occur on both Intel and AMD hardware?
I have done the majority of my testing on AMD hardware, but I just tried this a couple of times on an Intel machine installed with 64-bit openSUSE 11.0 RC2, and I could not duplicate this behavior. Let me know what additional information you require. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
