If you start with nomodeset and x11failsafe, it will boot completely into the desktop. But then, you have a non native resolution that looks really bad. The native resolution is 2560x1440 and it was not available in the KDE control center -> Display. I think that ATI HD5850 i not working with X11 driver radeonhd and the proprietary drivers do not work with openSuSE 11.3 either. I just changed removed the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf that was previously installed by the proprietary driver and made sure that radeonhd was in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d.
