When you start the installation from the dvd you get a message about the progress of the installation, I still see the graphical bootmenu and there were no messages from the kernel. At around 12% it has loaded the kernel and is going to read the initrd. You can leave the graphical view with 'ESC' and try it in text mode. Does that work better?
