[Bug 231429] New: YaST 2 hangs system on "Hardware Configuration" / "Printer" portion of install
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=231429 Summary: YaST 2 hangs system on "Hardware Configuration" / "Printer" portion of install Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: szornes@gmail.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com YaST 2 hangs on "Hardware Configuration" / "Printer" portion of install. When I get to this point the install freezes... by going to the root shell I have found that: the process "Modprobe Parport_PC" seems to be the culprit -- it takes up 99% of the cpu and refuses to be killed. I cannot install openSuSE 10.2 because of this. Also, I cannot run Hwinfo because of this. I do have the Yast2Logs.tgz but I do not see a place to attach them to this message. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

It never returns to prompt and does not write anything to the logfile (0 bytes). A quick check of the background processes (ps -ax) shows 2 new processes: sh -c /sbin/modprobe parport_pc 2>&1 and /sbin/modprobe parport_pc a quick check shows that the "modprobe parport_pc" is using 99.9% of processor. After modprobe starts running - I can only cold cycle the machine. I also ran "modprobe parport_pc" from xterm after a reboot - this causes nothing visible to happen. When I run "modprobe" this way - it does not take up the processor - it also provides no verbose output. However, as soon as the 'Hardware Configuration' screen comes up - "Modprobe" jumps to the top and hogs the processor. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Steve, running 'modprobe parport_pc' manually of course works, because the module is already loaded (so modprobe does nothing).
