Wow. There are a *lot* of xmodmap processes running, each appearing to be a child of the previous. This looks kind of like a fork bomb.
xmodmap doesn't fork itself, though. Can you, as the user usually performing the xmodmap provide the output of 'type xmodmap' ?
Ah. My apologies - I have been wasting your time. There was indeed a loop in the script that called xmodmap that was spawning like a salmon. So sorry, I was misled by top and the reports of similar problems with this process running away on SandyBridge processors.
