[Bug 246627] New: wrong keymap loaded
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=246627 Summary: wrong keymap loaded Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: SaX2 AssignedTo: ms@novell.com ReportedBy: quentin@links2linux.de QAContact: qa@suse.de suse loads the following (wrong) keymap on boot: "Loading keymap i386/qwertz/de-latin1-nodeadkeys.map.gz" I set the right keymap (basic, with deadkeys) with yast: Section "InputDevice" Driver "kbd" Identifier "Keyboard[0]" Option "Protocol" "Standard" Option "XkbLayout" "de" Option "XkbModel" "pc105" Option "XkbRules" "xfree86" EndSection This is _really_ annoying, and especially because I need the accents (deadkeys `´^). For now, the only workaround is "$ setxkbmap de" Thanks for fixing this bug as soon as possible. -Quentin -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

If the console map is set to "de-latin1-nodeadkeys" the X11 setup de+pc105 is correct -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=246627 sh@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEW |NEEDINFO Info Provider| |quentin@links2linux.de ------- Comment #2 from sh@novell.com 2007-02-23 07:42 MST ------- Please elaborate: When is that keymap loaded? During installation? Later? Always? In general, the nodeadkeys variant is much preferred by the vast majority of users because under Linux you need pure accents a lot more often than accented characters: In the shell (just think about 'escaping' or `evaluating` or ^regexp) and also in GUIs for URLs (http://somewhere.org/~someuser). Using the deadkeys variant forces you to hit the accent first, then the space bar - more key presses, and key presses that are not intuitive at all because you don't see anything until you hit the space bar (or some other letter that does not get accented). If you are suggesting that we change the general default keymap for German to deadkeys, this is clearly INVALID. This would be a step backwards. We will not do that. OTOH if you explicitly selected the deadkey variant somewhere and this selection does not get honored, this is a valid bug. Please elaborate. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=246627 ------- Comment #3 from quentin@links2linux.de 2007-02-24 04:50 MST ------- well, i've explicitly selected basic (or at least deadgraveacute) with SaX2, in order to be able to write in french (é,à, ...). During boot, I still get the nodeadkeys map loaded. I guess sax2 does not write the following line to xorg.conf: Option "XkbVariant" "basic" By manually setting "setxkbmap de -variant basic" most thing work, but then I do lose the Fn-Keys (fonction keys of my laptop for i.e volume and software-stuff). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Therefore including basic into xorg.conf is the same as including no variant I don't know what you are trying to do, but using a german map for writing french sounds strange to me -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=246627 ------- Comment #6 from quentin@links2linux.de 2007-02-26 13:32 MST ------- whatever I am trying to do, I have a german keyboard (and therefore the german layout) and want to use deadkeys (the be able to type accents, grave and acute: àáéè...). Since 10.1, by the way, I can't configure the variant (neither deadgraveacute nor basic) with sax2 anymore. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
