[Bug 679210] New: Compiz [desktop-effects] occluding desktop after starting invisible ghost-window
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=679210 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=679210#c0 Summary: Compiz [desktop-effects] occluding desktop after starting invisible ghost-window Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Compiz AssignedTo: bnc-team-compiz@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: badshah400@gmail.com QAContact: ories@novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:2.0b12) Gecko/20110222 Firefox/4.0b12 openSUSE 11.4, Default GNOME installation from DVD, x86-64. At times when I try to launch an application, its window starts up as a ghost (cannot see the app window, but it still works with the keyboard, mouse, etc). As soon as that happens, a part of the desktop (top-left quarter) of the desktop gets occluded and remains unresponsive even if you manage to close the ghost-window. The items on the desktop can be accessed by the keyboard, but mouse clicks, both right and secondary will not work. This happens on only the workspace where the ghost window started up; the other 3 (I have 4 workspaces) are working fine. Only cure is to disable desktop-effects and re-enable them, or log-out and log-in. The problem is not one which can be consistently reproduced. It happens once in a few days, and pinches :) hwinfo --gfx 30: PCI 105.0: 0300 VGA compatible controller (VGA) [Created at pci.318] Unique ID: ul7N.qX83VddqhhB Parent ID: vSkL.2yY_xudKZ6E SysFS ID: /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.0/0000:01:05.0 SysFS BusID: 0000:01:05.0 Hardware Class: graphics card Model: "ATI Radeon HD Graphics" Vendor: pci 0x1002 "ATI Technologies Inc" Device: pci 0x9710 "ATI Radeon HD Graphics" SubVendor: pci 0x1458 "Giga-byte Technology" SubDevice: pci 0xd000 Driver: "radeon" Driver Modules: "drm" Memory Range: 0xd0000000-0xdfffffff (ro,non-prefetchable) I/O Ports: 0xee00-0xeeff (rw) Memory Range: 0xfdfe0000-0xfdfeffff (rw,non-prefetchable) Memory Range: 0xfde00000-0xfdefffff (rw,non-prefetchable) IRQ: 18 (4442539 events) I/O Ports: 0x3c0-0x3df (rw) Module Alias: "pci:v00001002d00009710sv00001458sd0000D000bc03sc00i00" Driver Info #0: XFree86 v4 Server Module: radeonhd Config Status: cfg=no, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown Attached to: #10 (PCI bridge) Primary display adapter: #30 Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Meanwhile, ctrl-alt-backspace is my exorcist to keep this ghost-window away from my machine :)
Just a suggestion, since you will might lose data if you do Ctrl+Alt+Backspace: when the desktop is occluded, you can still use your keyboard (at least that is what I see on mine), so do 1.Press Alt+F2 2.Type in the launcher: metacity --replace 3.Hit Enter There it is, everything should be back to stable and useful, but with (evil ;)) desktop effects disabled. I tried to get the upstream compiz developers to notice this by shouting in their irc channel but no luck. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Some general observations of my own...
Happens daily on Nvidia binary, < 1/wk on nouveau (nvidia hw, obviously).
I am using Intel graphics. Happens daily.
Happens mostly (ironically) with ccsm and gnome-terminal.
I would say evince, eog, gnome-terminal are, in order, the most likely to trigger it for me.
Mostly seems to happen when the applications are started from gnome-do .
I don't use Do at all - not even installed, -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
