[Bug 223651] New: tseng driver broken for 1280x960 and 1400x1050
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=223651 Summary: tseng driver broken for 1280x960 and 1400x1050 Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Beta 2 plus Platform: PC OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: sndirsch@novell.com ReportedBy: mrmazda@ij.net QAContact: sndirsch@novell.com I upgraded to the 8.1-72 packages on ftp.gwdg.de. I ran first sax2 -r -c 1 and chose to change configuration. It suggested 1600x1200, which I accepted, and which generated a 8901 byte xorg.conf containing modes 1600x1200 1600x1024 1600x1000 1400x1050 1280x1024 1440x990 1280x960 1366x768 1280x800 1152x864 1280x768 1024x768 1280x600 1024x600 800x600 768x576 640x480. When I started X, it came up in 1280x800 mode, which is supported by neither Tseng BIOS nor the (standard 4:3) P991 CRT display. Next I ran sax2 -a -c 1 -r, which generated a 5096 byte xorg.conf containing modes 1600x1200 1280x1024 1024x768 800x600. X came up in fully functional and supported 1024x768. Third I tried sax2 -c 1 -r and accepted the initial suggestion instead of changing anything. xorg.conf was 5001 bytes modes 1600x1200 1280x1024 1024x768 800x600. X from that also came in fully functional 1024x768. Fourth I changed /usr/share/sax/profile/VideoRam from 2048 to 3072. xorg.conf was 5096 bytes with modes 1600x1200 1280x1024 1024x768 800x600. X came up in 1280x1024, but with a very broken color palette and the bottom 20% of the screen including the taskbar entirely black. Fifth I changed .../profile/VideoRam from 3072 to 4096 and ran sax2 -a -c 1 -r which generated a 5096 byte xorg.conf with modes 1600x1200 1280x1024 1024x768 800x600. That too came up in 1280x1024 with the same broken color problem. Sixth I edited xorg.conf to include these modes: 1400x1050 1280x960 1152x864 1024x768 800x600. It came up in 1400x1050 with the same broken color problem. Seventh I edited xorg.conf to add Option "NoAccel". That gave 1400x1050 with unbroken color palette, but left the black bottom 20%. Eighth I removed the 1400x1050 mode. That came up in 1280x960 with a shortened black bottom, about 36px, leaving about 4px at the top of the 40px tall kicker showing. Ninth I removed the 1280x960 mode, but left 1152x864. That came up in fully functional 1024x768. So, 1024x768 works, but 1280x960 and 1400x1050 do not. When booting the same system to SUSE 9.3 or SUSE 10.0 or Kubuntu Edgy 6.10, 1400x1050x16bpp works fine, and presumably so does 1280x960. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=223651 ------- Comment #2 from mrmazda@ij.net 2006-11-24 12:24 MST ------- Before opening this bug I did all the factory tests on a single boot, then tested the other operating systems. I thought that I recorded everything in enough detail that I could easily reproduce this, but now that I've rebooted into factory I find I cannot. 1400x1050 & 1280x960 now always work fine. I did notice one thing at the beginning when running sax2 -c 1 -r the first time after the sax2 upgrade a popup that asked about installing some new supporting packages. After I clicked yes it quickly disappeared, and I have not seen it again since. I still have a question before disposing of this bug: Why, when DDC has found a 4:3 display, does sax2 write all those disfiguring widescreen modes into the screen display subsections? Whenever X falls into using one of them, all screen objects are displayed with improper proportions. If 1600x1200 is selected while running sax2, the first fallback it chooses is 1600x1024, as the ET6x00 simply doesn't have enough RAM for 1600x1200. The same must be true when DDC finds a widescreen display if it writes 4:3 modes among the widescreens. Included among my puzzlement is the oddball 5:4 1280x1024 mode, which is appropriate only for displays for which the 5:4 1280x1024 is native. http://mrmazda.no-ip.com/auth/aspect.html Can't the modes written to the display subsections be limited to those that match the proportions of the display? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
