The problem seems to be the DVD drive itself. Trying to boot the 10.2 DVD gave the same problem. Changing out the DVD drive with a friend resolves the problem, and the 10.3 DVD boots! No idea why it gets so far before failing. Thanks for your help; sorry to send you down a false trail.
