[Bug 244309] New: DVD device not longer found after installing 10.2
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=244309 Summary: DVD device not longer found after installing 10.2 Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: 32bit OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: fabian.herschel@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de While it worked fine with SL9.2 and SL9.3 i miss my DVD device after installing opensuse 10.2. While other bugs are reporting problems with changed symlinks or udev rooles I guess my problem is even deeper, while i do not longer find the device using hwinfo. If fissable I could add a complete hwinfo dump from SL93 and 10.2. There are also some error messages when running hwinfo during the output of the ide driver (ata_piix) like ---- snip --- <4>ACPI Error (dsopcode-0481): Attempt to CreateField of length zero [20060707] <4>ACPI Error (psparse-0537): Method parse/execution failed [\_SB_.PCI0.SATA.ADJ_] (Node dffe639c), AE_AML_OPERAND_VALUE <4>ACPI Error (psparse-0537): Method parse/execution failed [\_SB_.PCI0.SATA.SECN.MAST._GTF] (Node dffe6ba8), AE_AML_OPERAND_VALUE --- snap --- -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

But yes, the annoying error messages are gone: furka:~ # hwinfo 2>&1 | grep -i error sit0: GLINK ethtool error: Invalid argument After setting libata.ata_acpi=0 the complete kernel command line is: furka:~ # cat /proc/cmdline root=/dev/sda2 vga=0x31a nolapic resume=/dev/sda1 splash=silent libata.ata_acpi=0 Now my questions: 1. Which info should I provide now? 2. Can the problem be forced by the nolapic param (don't know where it came from) - I will test asap, what happens, if I remove it. 3. You claimed two advantages of your parameter (a) error messages b) verify). How could I get the verification result that ACPI failures are not mysteriously interacting with command executions? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=244309 ------- Comment #8 from fabian.herschel@novell.com 2007-03-23 01:49 MST ------- No I have tested the boot with 1. acpi=oldboot (helped in other cases on some IBM blade centers) 2. removed the nolapic 3. with and without the libata.ata_acpi=0 But no combination fit my needs :-( The ide (not sata) devices are not found. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=244309 ------- Comment #9 from fabian.herschel@novell.com 2007-03-23 02:15 MST ------- Just did some more reboot and ONCE I got my DVD drive (hwinfo --cd) but after the next reboot the DVD drive was not available. Could be a timing problem? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

It seems that the current libata host state machine doesn't like your ODD. Similar problems have been reported for other ODDs and are being debugged upstream. The old IDE layer's HSM is more permissive, so that's why it worked in older kernels. I'd like to take this upstream so that Albert (who has implemented libata HSM) can take a look at it. Can you be persuaded into trying vanilla 2.6.20.4? It should fail similarly. Please report the result of 'lspci -nnvvv', 'dmesg' and the result of 'hdparm -I' from SL9 (so that we know which ATAPI device we're talking about, if you don't have SL9 installed now, dmesg of successful boot will do too) to linux-ide@vger.kernel.org and cc me and albertcc@tw.ibm.com. After you reported it to upstream, I'll resolve this one as WONTFIX and follow up in linux-ide@vger.kernel.org. Thanks. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=244309 ------- Comment #12 from teheo@novell.com 2007-05-24 04:33 MST ------- Yeah, you need to download the vanilla tarball and configure/compile it yourself. http://kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/linux-2.6.21.2.tar.bz2 The following is a howto on building a kernel. http://www.digitalhermit.com/linux/Kernel-Build-HOWTO.html Just build with libata ata_piix, scsi sd and your network interface card, ext3 fs built-in (not module). You don't need to generate initrd or even edit /boot/grub/menu.lst. After building the kernel, reboot and in the grub prompt, type 'e' which lets you edit the boot command line. Change the kernel parameter to point to the new kernel (tab completion works) and press enter. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Hmm... weird the URL works for me. Can you post boot dmesg of the succeeding boot with vanilla kernel?
Yes today it works for me to (just retried) but it did not work multiple days/ times in the past. I will attach the dmesh output asap (hopefully this afternoon) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
