No, there are no security concerns. If you are in the group disk, you are root,
because you can write to the raw partitions.
As part of the rules merge of all major distros, we have in factory now a group
"tape", and a rule which should assign it.
It looks like:
SUBSYSTEMS=="scsi", ATTRS{type}=="1|8", GROUP="tape"
If possible, would be good, if you could test if this rule would catch your
tapes. Just assign use "disk", if you don't want to add "tape" now.
