[Bug 278510] New: yast2 repair not accessible from YaST Control Center
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=278510 Summary: yast2 repair not accessible from YaST Control Center Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 4plus Platform: x86 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: casualprogrammer@yahoo.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com As the system should be fully maintainable using the GUI, all functions should be accessible through the menu. There is no entry for the repair module in the control center. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=278510 ------- Comment #2 from sh@novell.com 2007-05-29 08:03 MST ------- I wonder if it is technically feasible. You need yast2-repair if essential things are not working: If you can't boot Linux any more, if important partitions are no longer accessible, etc.; if you get as far as an X desktop with yast2-control-center, exactly what would you need yast2-repair for? We keep kicking out unneeded entries of the control centers. They only clutter them. IMHO it is not desirable to have yet another entry there that is not really useful. yast2-control-center is not the right place for marketing; its intention is to help our users, not our marketing department. I vote for closing this as INVALID (because not desirable or useful). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=278510 ------- Comment #3 from jsuchome@novell.com 2007-05-29 08:08 MST ------- I remember we were removing it from control center exactly because of these reasons - now I'm only looking for the written decision from those days... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=278510 ------- Comment #4 from casualprogrammer@yahoo.com 2007-05-29 12:36 MST ------- I am not sure whether it should be there or not, if it's there in CLI it should be there in GUI. I was resetting the rpm database manually and complained about YaST not providing this as a tool. Some of you folks pointed me to yast2 repair from a terminal. Which didn't provide what I wanted but gave me the idea of basic help ( first aid kit ) being available. If you don't get as far as GUI ( aka x server ) it won't help, but still it would be nice if you could get at it if desired. This sounds like making fire alarms only visible in burning houses. Only problem is, if the thing is on fire you won't see the buttons because of the smoke. Nobody keeps you from adding reasonable first aid to yast2 repair :-) I often can make it to the GUI and the call a terminal telling it init 3 and continue in the dark, just because there is no emergency lighting in GUI P.S. try to get to repair from the CD/DVD :-( -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

P.S. try to get to repair from the CD/DVD :-(
Yes I know it is tough, but that is a result of another solution (bug 156529). It might help to open another bug for it, but it there are different opinions about this, as you can see in mentioned bug. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=278510 ------- Comment #7 from casualprogrammer@yahoo.com 2007-05-30 02:50 MST ------- Maybe Bug 156529, Bug 273104 and this Bug (Bug 278510), as well as other bugs complaining about the menu system, should be tied together somehow ? Also I see the other two marked as "solved", what exactly is the solution ? The discussion in Bug 156529 obviously was taking place without any user around. All the Items throughout openSuSE marked Extra or Expert are items an "expert" will never use. As far as I know the true Linux followers, they tend to despise the GUI like the devil does holy water. Unexperienced users as well as users coming from other OS's will need EASY access to all emergency procedures. Instead of hiding them behind cryptic buttons they could be color coded, the GUI together with a decent graphics card provides enough colors to paint every menu item differently ;-) Even in the CLI someone has realized that colors are available, as being root gives me a red prompt recently, which is really nice ( thanks to whoever did that ) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
