I selected "software" and then "install or delete software" in yast (text mode, german). yast updates it's repos, seems to bring up the software choice menue but doesn't bring it up and falls back to the main menue. Manual downgrade to yast2-ncurses-2.18.10-2.1. has solved the problem.
