The scripts I'm using are part of the music server/client software GiantDisc, the problem occurs with all versions up to and including the latest development version in subversion. I've unsuccessfully tried to recreate the problem with small test scripts, but it appears the problem only occurs when several sql queries are sent off in fast sequence. It's probably easiest for you to test with the latest stable version 1.44 of GiantDisc, which is available here: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=213069&package_id=256473 I will send you a database dump, so you don't need to start from scratch. You won't need a Palm to test it, simply use the commandline-ncurses-client from http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=213069&package_id=272765&release_id=593784 Here are detailed instructions to set it up and recreate the problem: 1. Set up a user 'music' (for simplicity), unpack the core 1.44 package, and move its bin directory to /home/music/bin. You might have to install some prerequisites listed at http://giantdisc.wiki.sourceforge.net/GD+Installation, but for testing purposes, mysql, perl, and perl-DBD-mysql should probably suffice. 2. Create the mysql database GiantDisc, either from scratch with the scripts in the folder database/ or with the dump I'll send you. 3. Copy the configuration file .gdconfig to /home/music, delete line 58 and uncomment line 59, so that it reads "tcpiphost = localhost". 4. Start the main script gdd.pl and watch its output. 5. On a separate terminal (and possibly as a different user), unpack the ncurses-client, and run the script gdosdclient. It's default configuration will try to connect to the GiantDisc server at localhost:26468. With perl-DBD-mysql-4.008, you will now simply get the error message "problem reading playstate from GiantDisc server.", and in the gdd.pl output you will see several mysql queries (all initiated by commands like "r-ggh", "r-lago" and "r-plgetst") which never return a result (as the subscripts calling the DBD queries simply die during "dbh->prepare()" calls). As a consequence, the gdosdclient script finally notices something is wrong when the "r-plgetst" doesn't return anything. It took me a while to track down, but by using 'DBI_TRACE=2 ; gdd.pl' I finally saw that the "dbh->prepare()" calls never return and kill the calling perl sub-script (in this case gdgentools.pm which is called by gdd.pl via gdserv.pm, e.g. in the routine gdgentools::pll_get_playstate). With perl-DBD-mysql-4.010, the same actions produce correct mysql results, which are passed through to gdosdclient, which then correctly shows its main menu and can interact with the GiantDisc server. I should also mention that all this works fine on an openSUSE 10.3 system with perl-DBD-mysql-4.005, and on an 11.0 system (not sure what the version there was, as I now upgraded it to 11.1). It therefore seems that this is something specific to 4.008.
