For comment #2, this was unoffiical ia64 suselinux 10.3 beta3. This was observed on an SGI Prism (ia64) system but I assume any ia64 box with graphics would have the same issue. As you know, ia64 isn't supported with suselinux10.3 so the motivation is mainly to keep things in good enough shape so we can help check it out since it will be used for enterprise versions later. Nothing worked. I couldn't even log out and had to switch to a virtual terminal and cycle init 3 / init 5. I couldn't test with regular KDE due to bug 325829. From gnome, this problem persists. I'll see if I can get KDE going.
