[Bug 783192] New: Upgrade broke network functionality and NetworkManager due to bad configuration
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=783192 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=783192#c0 Summary: Upgrade broke network functionality and NetworkManager due to bad configuration Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.2 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.2 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: GNOME AssignedTo: bnc-team-gnome@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: novell@mirell.de QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686) AppleWebKit/537.13 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/24.0.1283.0 Safari/537.13 SUSE/24.0.1283.0 After doing a live upgrade using "zypper dup" to openSUSE 12.2, I was unable to connect to any network using NetworkManager on the GNOME Desktop. Surprisingly, manual run of wpa_supplicant and dhclient worked fine and allowed me to get a working internet connection. After a lot of investigation I stumbled about the fact that I had both "nm-system-settings.conf" and "NetworkManager.conf" configuration files in "/etc/NetworkManager". Latter is preferred and "nm-system-settings.conf" is deprecated. It looks like that file was there from a previous openSUSE install as I already did live upgrades from 11.4 or even earlier. As "nm-system-settings.conf" was missing the important line "plugins=ifcfg-suse,keyfile" networking was broken by default. It appears that NetworkManager was not using "NetworkManager.conf" but only used "nm-system-settings.conf" instead. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Add empty "/etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf" file 2. Boot into desktop 3. Select a wireless network from NetworkManager Actual Results: Either nothing happens (using NVIDIA blob driver) or an error dialog with "(32) This plugin does not support add/remove." is shown (w. NOUVEAU/modeset; indicates missing keyfile plugin). The NetworkManager icon was also not changing at all and showed the "disconnected" symbol only. Expected Results: The NetworkManager icon changes and the system connects to the selected wireless network. I solved this issue by removing the nm-system-settings.conf file and merging it's settings directly into NetworkManager.conf (appears to be the same syntax). Then everything started to work fine and connections to a wireless network could be established. My suggestion would be to check for traces of the deprecated file "/etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf" during package installation and either migrate the former settings to "NetworkManager.conf" or replace it completely. Another solution might be to check why the NetworkManager code apparently fails to comply to what the man page about "nm-system-settings.conf" suggests: "nm-system-settings.conf is a deprecated configuration file for NetworkManager (5). While this file can still be used, NetworkManager now defaults to reading the config file <SYSCONFDIR>/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf instead, falling back to nm-system-settings.conf if NetworkManager.conf does not exist." you forgot to mention GNOME:STABLE:3.6 being used... WAs this problem also with 'stock' 12.2 (which had an older NM release) or is this an issue newly introduced in G:S:3.6? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
