[Bug 210940] New: 3D acceleration and Xgl disabled for Quadro FX550, Desktop Effects - SaX2
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=210940 Summary: 3D acceleration and Xgl disabled for Quadro FX550, Desktop Effects - SaX2 Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Alpha 5 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Xgl AssignedTo: dreveman@novell.com ReportedBy: nteknikk@monet.no QAContact: bperry@novell.com During the installation configuration my NVIDIA Quadro FX550 card and Dell 2405 FPW WUXGA monitor were automatic detected and setup correct with 1920x1200 resolution and 24 bit colordepth using the OSS "nv" driver. To use 3D for Xgl/Compiz the latest NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64 proprietary driver were installed according to the Howto for Suse users. Afterwards the Gnome Control Center > Desktop Effects showed however that both 3D and Desktop Effects were disabled. Though the Nvidia Quadro FX550 card is still on the "not tested yet" part of the xgl HCL, it was NOT even possible to force 3D/Xgl enabled with the suggested Shift and mouse dual-click! It was neither possible to start SaX2 from the button in Desktop Effects, nor from the traditional program menu added to the panel. SaX2 started ok from YaST2>Graphic Card and display, but 3D was greyed out and it didn't sound possible to get 3D enabled there. Tried also "glxinfo" in a terminal, but the command wasn't found, remarkable as glxinfo did work in 10.1. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

It was neither possible to start SaX2 from the button in Desktop Effects
That (and the shift-double-click not working) are now fixed in autobuild and should be in Factory soon.
nor from the traditional program menu added to the panel.
An entirely unrelated bug, also fixed in today in autobuild
SaX2 started ok from YaST2>Graphic Card and display, but 3D was greyed out and it didn't sound possible to get 3D enabled there.
Was it grayed-out-and-checked or grayed-out-but-unchecked? I'm pretty sure the normal state when using the proprietary driver is that 3D is always enabled and can't be turned off, so the checkbox is grayed out, but it's grayed out in the checked state, not the unchecked state.
Tried also "glxinfo" in a terminal, but the command wasn't found
That's probably why gnome-xgl-settings thinks it's disabled then. If you install the "freeglut" package, does gnome-xgl-settings think 3D is enabled now? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I'll check again tomorrow on my office workstation

Sorry, forgot to mentione that Andreas Jaeger pointed me to check out if freeglut was installed. It wasn't, and after I installed it, I attached glxinfor output in comment #3 above (also suggested freeglut ougt to be included i.e in the X org pattern or similar). I don't think the gnome-xgl-settings told 3D was enabled after that, but I'll check also that tomorrow. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

That was the fix to gnome-panel for 202076... Hm... actually, no, that's only for the run dialog. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=210940 ------- Comment #10 from swesemeyer@hotmail.com 2006-10-14 02:08 MST ------- I raised the bug #210932 which was marked as duplicate of this and in my case installing freeglut fixed the original gnome-xgl-settings problem of it not recognizing that 3D accelaration was enabled. It now detects it and offers to enable the Desktop effects. However, clicking on the button to enable it does nothing. Even after logging out and back in again, the desktop effects are still not enabled. Starting it from the command line spews out loads of (gnome-xgl-settings:6230): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_list_store_set_valist: assertion `GTK_IS_LIST_STORE (list_store)' failed Mind you, I'm running it from within a Konsole in KDE rather than Gnome but that was not a problem in 10.1. I was confused before, it doesn't need freeglut, it needs 3ddiag, which it already does depend on. Stefan, is this a bug in 3Ddiag? Should it stop expecting freeglut since we don't ship it by default any more and things still seem to work fine? (If not, I can just make compiz-gnome depend on freeglut, even though it doesn't need it.) Eventually I guess I should fix gnome-xgl-settings to check with sax directly rather than using 3Ddiag. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Therefore I added freeglut to patterns for Beta2. So as long as you don't unselect it during installation/update (it has been in selections before) you won't run into this problem again.
