I have python-virtinst installed, because I need it for the package koan. Now, when I start virt-manager, I get the message that my python-virtinst is too old and virt-manager can not start.
There never has been a python-virtinst RPM in openSUSE and SLES. The python-virtinst code has always been bundled with the virt-manager RPM for years (even before I took on ownership).
After digging a bit, I found out that virt-manager seems to contain it's own python-virtinst now, instead of using our existing one.
The python-virtinst source included in virt-manager is from Redhat. They release virt-manager and virtinst together and include version checking code to keep them compatible. virt-manager imports virtinst code directly.
virt-manager has not set a "provides: python-virtinst" in the RPM either.
This makes sense if there were a python-virtinst RPM on any of our distros. Could you create a FATE request for SLE 11/12 and os12.2 requesting that python-virtinst exist as its own RPM? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

hmm, there is python-virtinst on openSUSE 12.1 in the openSUSE-12.1-Oss repo. I used that for koan wich is in the cobbler package and it was taken from from devel:languages:python and put to openSUSE - I think already with openSUSE 11.4 IIRC
unfortunately the package is too old for the virt-manager
The default install media (ISO/DVD) for 12.1 does not contain a python-virtinst package. It is certainly reasonable to create a separate RPM for it going forward, but it is too late for already mastered 12.1 media. It sounds like someone else needed a stand alone virtinst package. Looking in Factory I see a python-virtinst created by mc@suse.de (Michael Calmer?) about a year ago. It looks like you have touched this version as well. I'm not sure how to get updated RPMs into the openSUSE-12.1-Oss repo. Perhaps they are just automatically pulled from Factory. I have updated the version of python-virtinst in the 'Virtualization' repo that is compatible with the current virt-manager and submitted it to Factory. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

You are right, it's not on the DVD but in the oss repo which is activated per default.
yes, I need the python-virtinst package for koan (subpackage of cobbler - where I'm the maintainer from). So we used the python-virtinst package from devel:languages:python I did not know that virt-manager has it's own python-virtinst but anyway, a dependency from koan to virt-manager would not be nice.
I assume (prior maintainers are gone) that python-virtinst was bundled with virt-manager because virt-manager is completely dependent on python-virtinst code and no other packaage at the time needed python-virtinst.
I think the best solution would be to remove python-virtinst code from virt-manager and maintain it in the separate python-virtinst package.
Agreed.
Maybe we should do an online update for virt-manager for openSUSE where the RPM dependencies are fixed.
This should be possible with the proper paperwork :) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
