[Bug 219797] New: High processor load
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=219797 Summary: High processor load Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Beta 1 Platform: i386 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: misch@multinet.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Hi, I have a plain textmode installtion of 10.2 b 1 as a virtual vmware machine. After installation I logged in and found the machine answering "a bit slow". I looked at the uptime and found a load of at least 0.18 even if the machine does not have to do anything. Processor idle time is around 95% instead of normal 99%. On the other hand I have a vm production machine of 10.0 on the same vm box and this tells me a load of 0.00 uptime most of the time. Screening through top I cannot identify a specific process eating up all the processor time. Any hints for a further search? Sometimes HAL likes to probe usb storage devices, which can artificially increase the load. See bug #200207 for some more details about this if you are interested. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=219797 ------- Comment #2 from misch@multinet.de 2006-11-16 00:54 MST ------- Hi, see my original report. Nothing in the "top" list. I also have no access to the bug 200207. Any other (useful) hints for further search? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=219797 ------- Comment #3 from chrubis@novell.com 2006-11-16 03:16 MST ------- The problem with load can be caused by HAL dameon polling usb-storage or some other device. Then try to disable HAL. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Look for processes stuck in the "D" state in the list. You should now have access to see bug 200207 for more information. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=219797 ------- Comment #5 from misch@multinet.de 2006-11-16 12:51 MST ------- Hi, no process in the "D" state. Nothing to do with USB since it is a vmware system and has no USB devices. I just wanted to reproduce the bug but now everything seems to be normal. Stop / Start HAL did not change anything. Sys load now at 0.05 with ~99% idle. Please put this bug "on hold". I will further investigate the conditions of the occurance of the bug and will send further notice if I find something. Thanks. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
