Since I wrote the comment, I have run into some issues with Wicd, so it's not the panacea that I thought it was. I'm now just using the regular ifup/ifdown, which is rock-solid, but I don't get a nice menu of wireless networks. It's okay, since I rarely take my system outside of my apartment. One of these weekends, I'll dig deeper into what's going wrong with NetworkManager on my system. If it's something wrong with the code (and not just configuration), then I'll try to fix it and will file a child bug with the patch.
