If eject or the dvd button is pressed while the dvd is still registering the disk (the light on the dvd device is still illuminated ) the device will open the tray without closing it again. output of eject -v /dev/sr0 whether the tray stays out or not:- eject: device name is `/dev/sr0' eject: expanded name is `/dev/sr0' eject: `/dev/sr0' is not mounted eject: `/dev/sr0' is not a mount point eject: `/dev/sr0' is not a multipartition device eject: trying to eject `/dev/sr0' using CD-ROM eject command eject: CD-ROM eject command succeeded If I press the dvd button as the tray is closing after a failed eject I get this message in /var/log/messages:- Oct 6 22:35:24 Arbuthnot kernel: sr0: CDROM (ioctl) error, command: Start/Stop Unit 1b 00 00 00 03 00 Oct 6 22:35:24 Arbuthnot kernel: sr: Sense Key : Hardware Error [current] Oct 6 22:35:24 Arbuthnot kernel: sr: Add. It comes from: 64-lvm2.rules which must never unconditionally run any program on every block device. Please get rid of the vol_id call, it's already called in the earlier device-mapper rules for dm devices. If you need to call it again, for whatever reason, you need to limit the invocation to lvm volumes. Just like what the "persistent-storage" rule does. The difference is that physical volume can also be the whole drive instead of partition, and it might be changed on "change" ACTION. That's why I have to rerun it. Is that possible to tell the difference between eject and load of DVD then ? I first experienced this problem with "dd_rescue /dev/sr0 rescued.img" and have also experienced with k3b copy with a cdparanoia value of 3. I have to either kill the process or in the worst cases alt/sysreq/e or even sometimes I have to cold reset the box. Is there anything I can do to test if this is caused by the rule change or is it not likely.
