I have also followed your advice, and upgraded alsa, libasound2 a,d many more packages from multimedia:audio repository, with no luck either. I have tried aoss wrapper together with amsn since there as no way to use alsa snack support (this library segfaults). aoss is working well on my 32 bits laptop, not on my 64 bits desktop.
