It used to be configured in my.cnf, section [safe_mysqld], but that has been removed and the logfile is now configured as a startup argument: --log-error=/var/lib/mysql/<hostname>.err I think that is the real problem - errors are simply not being written to /var/log/mysql/mysqld.log anymore.
