[Bug 223807] New: mediawiki rpm lacks database rpm dependency
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=223807 Summary: mediawiki rpm lacks database rpm dependency Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: RC 1 Platform: i586 OS/Version: Linux Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: richard.bos@xs4all.nl QAContact: qa@suse.de The mediawiki rpm does not pull in a database. A database is definately needed by mediawiki. This could be either mysql or postgress. As the former (mysql) is more popular (by the mediawiki devs) I propose to add mysql as dependency to mediawiki rpm. See attachment for a screenshot showing the dependencies for mediawiki, as determined by yast. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

'Recommends: mysql' at most, so that it can be deselected w/o breaking dependencies. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=223807 ------- Comment #4 from andreas.hanke@gmx-topmail.de 2006-11-27 01:33 MST ------- The Problem with "Recommends" is that it gets revisited during an update. Example: A user installs mediawiki and gets mysql installed because of "Recommends". But the user doesn't need it and removes it. Now you release a security update for mediawiki. zypp re-evaluates the "Recommends" and installs mysql again. Such things can be really annoying (esp. because you need to have the CDs around), and can only be solved by allowing zypp to install it again, and removing it afterwards (because the YaST GUI does not allow deselection of recommended packages). This is especially relevant for systems with an automatic online update setup (because it breaks the automatic online update). I vote against adding this even as a "Recommends". -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=223807 ------- Comment #5 from richard.bos@xs4all.nl 2006-11-27 01:51 MST ------- Your example is clear, and understandable. On the other hand there is the user that wants to install mediawiki and expects after the installation that it can use MW right away. (AT least start with configuration). But than it appears that the database is just not there, that's rather unexpected. Hence I would propose to have mysql added. How can a user be informed that MW still needs to be installed, that is basically the question, when the user wants to have mysql running on the same system as the webserver.... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=223807 anicka@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEW |RESOLVED Resolution| |INVALID ------- Comment #6 from anicka@novell.com 2006-11-27 06:18 MST ------- I also do not think it is a good idea to add even a weak dependency of mediawiki on mysql. Both of the solutions have a little negative affect on some users. But I think it is much better to install mysql manually once (for users who want to run mysql server on the same machine) than to remove mysql manually lots of times with every security update (for users who use remote mysql server - they probably do not want to have installed mysql they are not using). And security updates for mediawiki are released quite often. Anyway, mediawiki does not work out of the box and user who is able to set it up should be also able to manually install package with mysql server, when he chooses to run mediawiki locally. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
