But I was able to trace the problem back to a lack of disk space. I have a small /boot partition (62MB) and for some reason I seem to have installed a few extra kernels (pae, xen) (don't remember doing it). Anyway, when I went through the Update workaround, it complained about the lack of space and I deleted all unused kernels, reinstalling the desktop one. If you are using only the desktop kernel, then the default one can be temporarily deleted before the update. Each version seems to take 22 or 23 MB, thus trying to keep 3 of them will not work. Use 'tune2fs -l /dev/<partition>' to check the reserved block count. Root is able to use those but they do not show up in 'df' listing. The usual is 5% of the partition.
