If you are comfortable typing Umlauts with the German keyboard, just use that and forget about the rest.
Ok. But I still can't enter them, nothing happens if I press a Umlaut on the keyboard. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

As it works fine for me I really don’t know what to do here. Does the problem occur for you always or only for certain documents? If you start acroread without any document at all, i.e. only acroread There is already one input field in the toolbar which you could use for testing, the "Find" input field. Can you input Umlauts there? I ask because if you cannot even input Umlauts there, we would know that it has nothing to do with certain features of editable documents which may behave weird for other reasons. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

there is exactly the errormessage you wrote on the top of the log.
Although this file is called xsession-errors, not everything in that file are error messages. Some messages, like these messages about input methods are there even when everything went OK for debugging purposes. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

will try it out shortly (and report my findings)
Thank you! New package here: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/M17N/openSUSE_11.0/noarch/x11-tool... It has already been built. By the way, In comment#28 I wrote that the built package will be in the i586 or x86_64 subdirectories. But as you can see from my changelog, I made the package "noarch", it contains only text files, no binaries. Therefore it is in the "noarch" subdirectory. Maybe that is the reason why you didn’t find it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Sorry, Mike, for reopening this ticket, but after having been running with this new setup, "acroread" is now capable of saving files using German umlauts, but the searching tool in "acroread" now simply removes the umlauts, i.e. "ü" (u umlaut) becomes "u" (plain), etc. -- also plain "u" matches as well "u" as "ü" (u umlaut).
Works for me.
That was not really want I wanted... :-) I want, naturally, the umlauts to be available in the searching tool as well as the file saving menu.
Works for me as well. Settings are as follows: mfabian@magellan:~/test-texts/pdf/german$ locale LANG=de_DE.UTF-8 LC_CTYPE="de_DE.UTF-8" LC_NUMERIC="de_DE.UTF-8" LC_TIME="de_DE.UTF-8" LC_COLLATE="de_DE.UTF-8" LC_MONETARY="de_DE.UTF-8" LC_MESSAGES="de_DE.UTF-8" LC_PAPER="de_DE.UTF-8" LC_NAME="de_DE.UTF-8" LC_ADDRESS="de_DE.UTF-8" LC_TELEPHONE="de_DE.UTF-8" LC_MEASUREMENT="de_DE.UTF-8" LC_IDENTIFICATION="de_DE.UTF-8" LC_ALL= mfabian@magellan:~/test-texts/pdf/german$ GTK_IM_MODULE=cedilla acroread kastast.pdf -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

BTW, while these settings only concerns "acroread", should not the settings of the language and input method environment variables better be localized to "acroread" itself (i.e. in the "acroread" starting script), instead of having these settings set globally??
I cannot change GTK_IM_MODULE=xim to GTK_IM_MODULE=cedilla in the acroread start script because GTK_IM_MODULE=xim might be set for a reason, it might be set because the user really wants to use an input method which can only use xim and does not have its own gtk input module. But in that case, such a user would have installed this input method and the /etc/X11/xim script from the x11-tools package would then start this input method. I added the workaround to use GTK_IM_MODULE=cedilla by default to the /etc/X11/xim script in x11-tools and not to acroread because there I can check whether input methods are installed or not. This /etc/X11/xim script is there to start the "best" input method of the installed ones by default or the input method specified in /etc/sysconfig language. I.e. this script knows anyway if no input method at all is installed. Only in that case, when no input method is installed, it makes sense to set GTK_IM_MODULE=cedilla as the default. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

... entering in the search field ... "ä" (umlaut "a" using German keyboard and keyboard settings) results in having the word "Start" on the first page highlighted, a word which does not really contains any "ä" (umlaut "a").
and comment #37:
Yes, I can reproduce that a search for ä matches both a and ä.
But that is a different problem, you *can* input the ä correctly, apparently the search algorithm in acroread is designed to match both ä and ä then. That is an internal acroread problem. Or maybe even a "feature". I cannot do anything about that. Please report that upstream.
As it turns out, this is actually a feature of Acroread -- It is even configurable! Go to Edit -> Preferences, select the Search submenu. Here you can find the "Ignore Diacritics and Accents", which per default is checked on, thus resulting in the observed search results. When checking this option off, the result is that the umlauts (ä, ö and ü) are now distinguished from their non umlaut (a, o and u) characters. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The absence of an answer to comments #38 and #40, as well as the lack of an update package in the OpenSUSE update repositories for 11.0 and 11.1, I take the answer to be a "no".
Yes, I think this is too minor to warrant an update for 11.0. And the fix is already included in the released 11.1. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
