[Bug 257026] New: lvcreate formats with reiserfs without asking
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=257026 Summary: lvcreate formats with reiserfs without asking Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: x86 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: fred.blaise@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de If you create a LV like: --- root@fredb-opensuse:/home/fblaise # lvcreate -n "lv_VM" -L+10GB vg_system Logical volume "lv_VM" created --- And then try to format it with XFS for example, an error message is displayed that it already has reiserfs on it. --- root@fredb-opensuse:/home/fblaise # mkfs.xfs /dev/vg_system/lv_VM mkfs.xfs: /dev/vg_system/lv_VM appears to contain an existing filesystem (reiserfs). mkfs.xfs: Use the -f option to force overwrite. --- It indeed has the reiserfs fs on it, as I can mount it with no option: --- root@fredb-opensuse:/home/fblaise # mount /dev/vg_system/lv_VM /mnt root@fredb-opensuse:/home/fblaise # mount [...] /dev/mapper/vg_system-lv_VM on /mnt type reiserfs (rw) --- This behavior doesn't happen in the SLES release. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=257026 fehr@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEW |RESOLVED Resolution| |INVALID ------- Comment #1 from fehr@novell.com 2007-03-26 05:02 MST ------- There is certainly no code that formats a newly created LV by default. Essentially the content of a newly created LV is random, since there is no initialisation of the blocks of a newly created LV. Therefore is might happen that by chance the start of a newly created LV contains a reiserfs filesystem since the blocks used for the newly created LV were formerly occupied by a LV containing a reiserfs. Therefore if you want to be really sure that a newly created LV contains no filesystem signature just erase the start of the new LV with dd or use the force option of the mkfs program. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
