What I guess (it's just a guess for now):
There are 2 ACPI devices (ECP/EPP) serving the parallel port in ACPI.
I expect that currently it is luck which one the parport_pc driver gets
assigned to, because the _STA (is the device present? Am I allowed to use it?)
is not evaluated by the PNPACPI layer.
I expect it works like that:
If in BIOS ECP is set, the _STA function of the PNP0400 (ECP) device will
return present and the other one not and vice versa.
So if you switch this setting in BIOS and it didn't work before, it will now
work because it gets the right one of the two devices (which doesn't fix the
bug in kernel -> not evaluating _STA, but it could already give a hint and
workaround...).
