[Bug 280374] New: X dies after kernel update with nvidia + compiz
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=280374 Summary: X dies after kernel update with nvidia + compiz Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: x86 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Blocker Priority: P5 - None Component: Update Problems AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: arahne@arahne.si QAContact: jsrain@novell.com I just ran a yast update, including a kernel update. I had original (binary) nvidia driver, and Compiz enabled. After the reboot, X wouldn't start, and I was stuck with text login. It has been discussed before and you will say I brought it upon myself by using Nvidia driver. And it is my own responsability, ... <flame parenthesis> Get over the crusade thing, and think about how to alleviate the suffering of using SUSE. If a kernel update is done by yast, and you see nvidia is installed, download the latest driver from nvidia site and install it during next reboot. I can do it manually, so I don't see why an update script can't. But it gets even better: sax2 -m 0=nv allows me to reconfigure X with open source driver, everything looks fine, but X still won't run, as it fails on missing glx. Now I would reconfigure Nvidia to get glx, but I don't have the driver, and without X, can't download it and can't mount the USB key to which I downloaded it on a different computer, since /media shows no signs of life. Luckily the glx tipped me off that I need to disable the Compiz. After some googling I found gnome-xgl-switch --disable-xgl which spitted all kind of errors about how I am doing this outside of SUSEconfig and how it can't find var/run/gdm.pid And a KDE user like me would never expect this to work. Still, it did the trick, and then I could reconfigure the system using nv driver, get the nvidia driver, init 3, configure nvidia, renable compiz, init 5, back in business. Imagine a newbie doing this. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
