Result: saw the classic stipple and cursor at the correct resolution,
Sounds good!
1) Ctrl-Alt-Backspace produced a beep from the built-in speaker that lasted about a second.
You need to press this key combination again right after to kill the Xserver. We introduced this with 11.1. Or was it already with 11.0. I don't know. Because we had customers, who were pressing this key combination by accident. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

2) After running X once this way and killing it, I cannot run it again. If I try, I get a black screen and X will not die except with SIGKILL (from an ssh session).
3) After I kill it with SIGKILL, I still can't switch to VT1.
4) Rebooting (init 6) does not work. The only solution is to cut power.
This doesn't sound good.
5) The kernel modules intel_agp and i915 are both loaded. Don't know whether that's good or bad.
That's fine. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I believe this is what is happening during a regular system start. Thus I would be interested into the logfile for the second Xserver run. I couldn't find anything obvious in the logfile you've attached. Thus I believe this was for the first Xserver run, which worked fine. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Indeed. Apparently the Xserver hangs the second time after

I cannot reproduce the black screen/freeze on my 845G machine (Dell Optiplex GX260) at all. I'm using a regular 1280x1024 TFT monitor. I suggest to switch to fbdev driver as workaround. Use 'sax2 -r -m 0=fbdev' to achieve this
This apparently requires /dev/fb0, which does not exist on my system (ENOENT), probably because I installed the OS using text mode. Here's my boot line: kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31.5-0.1-default root=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST380023A_3KB1CCS6-part2 resume=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST380023A_3KB1CCS6-part1 splash=silent quiet showopts I'm guessing there's a kernel parameter that will turn on framebuffer support? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Thanks. For the record, the highest fb resolution that works on my Optiplex GX260 is 0x305. Time to get a new machine, I reckon. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Found a better workaround -- use KDE instead of Gnome! It appears that Gnome restarts X during login (as control passes from the login screen to Gnome itself). KDE does not do this, so the bug described in this report does not get triggered. I can still always reproduce this problem by stopping and starting X multiple times in quick succession, but by using KDE, it doesn't really matter. Still, I hope the i915 driver (or whatever the problem is) gets fixed sometime. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
