[Bug 803026] New: Radeon graphics fault: Display shifted third of way to the right
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=803026 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=803026#c0 Summary: Radeon graphics fault: Display shifted third of way to the right Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.3 Version: RC 1 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: SUSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: hacker@scarlet-jade.com QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:18.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/18.0 After a clean installation, the display is shifted about a third of the way rightwards so I wind up with a split screen. The shift begins during the boot process, with splash screens and diagnostic messages all shifted to the right but not as far as on the final boot screen. Graphics device is ATI Radeon. The display worked fine with 12.1 and 12.2. I've attached an external drive to the machine and installed 12.3 RC1 on it using GRUB2-EFI instead of GRUB2. Unfortunately(?), there was no sign of Windows 7 on the menu.
Was Windows 7 installed in BIOS or EFI mode?
So, this problem seems to be associated with GRUB2 but not GRUB2-EFI nor the actual installed OSes. Intriguing!
BIOS and EFI use totally different firmware drivers so it is quite possible that they initialize adapter differently. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Knowing next to nothing about EFI, I had a Google around and found that I should see an EFI FAT partition if W7 had been installed in EFI mode. As I don't have that partition, I assume W7 was installed in BIOS and that would explain why GRUB2-EFI didn't see it?

OK, that would explain why GRUB2 was always affected but I'm still puzzled as to why newly-installed or updated systems should now be displayed incorrectly as well. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

GRUB2 screen is NOT OK. It is shifted 20% to the right.
Could you try going in command line in grub2 (press 'c'). Then set pager=1 videoinfo it should list all video modes grub2 believes your adapter supports. Current video mode is marked with '*'. You could test other video modes using videotest WxHxD where WxHxD is width, height, depth as shown by videoinfo. My guess is that grub2 autoselects video mode that adapter does not support well (at least in combination with your terminal). Note, it may lock you computer (doing this in qemu reliably requires hard kill). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Graham,
Are you happy to test again under 13.1 M4? It would be helpful to know if this problem persists.
No, it's working fine. I made a new install from DVD - not an update - and the display was fine. Apologies for not reporting earlier that 13.1 was OK. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

No worries. But it's still an issue in 12.3 doing a clean install right?
Yes, I've checked by making a new install from the DVD and it's still occurring. I saw on an openSUSE newsgroup that someone was having similar problems with Radeon graphics on a laptop and so pointed them to this report. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
