[Bug 492302] New: Update to kernel 2.6.27.21-0.1 (11.1-test repo), post-scriptlet hangs (fails)
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=492302 Summary: Update to kernel 2.6.27.21-0.1 (11.1-test repo), post-scriptlet hangs (fails) Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: x86 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: AxelKoellhofer@web.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- User-Agent: Opera/9.64 (X11; Linux x86_64; U; de) Presto/2.1.1 I use the update-test repositories in order to find (and report if necessary) problems with scheduled updates for openSUSE 11.1. When installing the latest kernel-update from 2.6.27.19-3.2 to 2.6.27.21-0.1 with zypper both installations (I have i586 and x86_64 installed on the same machine) showed the same, unpleasant behavior. Installation of all three packages kernel-default, kernel-default-(base/extra) (x86_64) or kernel-pae(base/extra) (i586) took extremely long, more than 5 minutes per package and the installation process hung on "setting up /lib/modules/2.6.27.21-*flavor*". The output of "top" showed "sed" running at high CPU-usage for that time and in one case even after 10 minutes the process was not finished, so I cancelled update (CTRL-C) getting the (expected) error "post srciptlet failed". Downloading the respective RPM-packages and installing them with "rpm -Uvh" improved things only a little but at least it finished after quite some time (> 10 minutes for all three packages) on a quite recent machine (Intel core duo T9400 2x2.53 GHz and 4GB RAM). Interestingly, I experienced the same problems with an openSUSE Factory installation (x86_64, running in a VirtualBox under 11.1) when upgrading kernel from 2.6.29-rc8 to final. I have quite a few kmp-packages installed on my 11.1 systems (around 15), which might explain, that post-installation takes a little longer because of the modules for new "weak-updates"-folder have to be found and linked, but this would not explain the behavior on Factory (where no extra kmp-packages were installed) and I didn't experience this problem before ever before (i.e. when updating from 2.6.27.18 to 2.6.27.19 from 11.1-test, the 2.6.27.18 was never oficially released though). Maybe there have been some changes to the post.install scriptlets which cause this "hanging"? As this behaviour was reproduible on two differnet (three counting the VM-install of Factory) installations and might other users cause to "panic" and maybe cancelling the installation process resulting in a possibly broken/unfinished kernel upgrade, I set this to critical (at least provisionally). Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Add 11.1-test Repository to your repo list 2. try to update kernel to 2.6.27.21-0.1 with zypper up (dup) -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

--- Comment #2 from Axel Köllhofer
Could you please downgrade the rpms and repeat the update with
# rpm -Uvv kernel-{base,,extra}-2.6.27.21-0.1.x86_64.rpm 2>&1 | \ perl -ne 'print time, " ", $_;' | tee rpm-vv.txt
I tried to reconstruct the whole thing (also downgrading all installed kmp-packages) but by directly updating via rpm -Uvh kernel-{base,,extra}-2.6.27.21-0.1.*.rpm I was not able to reproduce the behavior any more. My next idea was, that the problem might be related to the incomplete upgrade I got before using zypper, so I wanted to reproduce that. Unfortunately, the update-test repository seems to have a problem at the moment (I get the same output on i586 and x86_64). zypper ref repo-update-test Retrieving repository 'openSUSE-11.1-Update-test' metadata [done] Building repository 'openSUSE-11.1-Update-test' cache [done] Error building the cache: 'repo2solv.sh' '-o' '/var/cache/zypp/solv/repo-update-test/solv' '/var/cache/zypp/raw/repo-update-test' repo_repomdxml: no element found at line 6:0 Skipping repository 'openSUSE-11.1-Update-test' because of the above error. Could not refresh the repositories because of errors. I will try later with 11.1. BTW, I just completed a dist-upgrade on my factory installation and the kernel-updates went fine this time (including 20 randomly chosen kmp-packages which I installed deliberately to see if they generate the problem). As I am not really sure, if I will be able to reproduce this again, I will set the priority to normal. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
