It should be used only if you have a good reason for it (e. g. you want to install branding or additional script for optional package). But it causes many problems, so it's good to prevent it: - If the real directory owning package will change its path/convention/branch, packages owning old destination direcotory will continue to build, but they will be broken, because they will continue to use old path. - It hides missing dependencies. In case of XDG directories, most of them should be owned by filesystem. (In case of etc/xdg/autostart, we can think also about X11 libs or other similar stuff.)
