[Bug 231801] New: NetworkManager Crash?
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=231801 Summary: NetworkManager Crash? Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: ammulder@chariotsolutions.com QAContact: qa@suse.de I left my laptop on last night. It has both an Ethernet and wireless device, and the wireless was connected. When I visited it this morning, it was no longer connected (and the last e-mail I got was a bit after midnight). At first, the KDE networkmanager icon showed the disconnected icon and listed only the wireless network that it had previously been connected to in the scan results, but if I selected that, the progress bar quickly went to 57% and then disappeared and it reverted back to the "disconnected" icon. When I ran "iwlist scan" as root, it showed multiple wireless networks (as expected; there are several in the area), so the list showing only the one network was definitely wrong. I used the icon to change state to offline, and then online again. After that. the KDE network manager icon said there were no network devices present. I suspended at that point and resumed in a different location. The icon still said no network devices present. I went into the YaST Network Devices tool, edited the wireless without making any changes, and saved. After that, the KDE network manager icon worked as expected. For what it's worth, I'm using an ndiswrapper driver, but I'm hoping there's a log file or something that might show if this is a problem with network manager itself vs. the wireless driver. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=231801 ------- Comment #1 from wstephenson@novell.com 2007-01-09 07:20 MST ------- Can you reproduce this, and check the output of nm-tool before using yast to restart NetworkManager? This will verify that the problem lies at the NetworkManager layer or below, not in knetworkmanager. It sounds very much like an driver problem to me though. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

When i open up the system editor from yast and to to Network>Hardware>Config>NetworkManager it tells me that it is running. Other times it just says that I am disconnected (usually happens on start up) and when i click on the icon it will only list wired devices, even though my WLAN card is active. When the second one happens sometimes going into yast and making it thing that i edited something with with my WLAN card through the Network Devices window and then reseting everything by clicking the finish and let that run it will read my network card. If it helps my WLAN card is a Dell wireless 1470 DualBand WLAN, the make is Brodcom. I am also using the linuxant driverloader, for my WLAN card. Side note: I used the same driver, driverloader, and laptop when i was running 10.1 and I did not have this problem with it. This only started when i upgraded to 10.2. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=231801 ------- Comment #5 from thoenig@novell.com 2007-01-18 16:28 MST ------- Adam, I'm not entirely sure what you mean by 'faking' the configuration. When using NetworkManager the common use case is that you either use the GNOME or KDE frontend (GNOME: 'nm-applet', KDE: 'knetworkmanager') to control the NetworkManager daemon. The frontends are storing the network configuration and keys. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=231801 ------- Comment #6 from vendion@charter.net 2007-01-18 17:10 MST ------- I use knetworkmanager as my frontend, but the problem does not lie in that. What i mean by 'faking' the configuration is every time my WLAN card is not going to run i have to go into YaST>Network Devices> Network Card. From there i have to edit the settings for my WLAN card, by going into hardware options and click around not changing anything then go the the page where you choose what kind of wireless network you want and if you want it to be wep key etc. and from there click finish let everything run. Usually when i do this NetworkManager refreshed and then kwallet asks for my password so knetworkmanager can connect to my wire network. This only happens with NetworManager wants to run. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Running 'rcnetwork restart' produces this in the konsole produces this output: "Shutting down the NetworkManager done Shutting down the DHCP DBUS Daemon done Shutting down the NetworkManagerDispatcher done Starting the DHCP DBUS Daemon done Starting the NetworkManagerDispatcher done Starting the NetworkManager done " and then the with the input of my password for kwallet it connect to my wireless signal.
The only problem with that is use it more that twice and networkmanager will stop running altogether, knetworkmanager even says that Netorkmanager is not running. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=231801 ------- Comment #16 from sveld@wannit.nl 2007-02-10 08:26 MST ------- I have the exact same problem using OpenSuse 10.2, Gnome and Networkmanager. After working a while with the wireless nework it just loses connection and one is not able to reconnect. Need to reboot my laptop to get it working again. rcnetwork restart is not sufficient to get the wireless network running again. What I found out is that when the ammount of traffic over the wireless network seems high then the connection gets dropped. For example just doing some web browsing is not problem. But when syncing folders with iFolder with larger files then the connection gets dropped. Also this week when I tried my VMWare client on my laptop to connect to my VMWare server to get to my virtual machines, the wireless connection is then dropped almost instantly when also having and RDP connection with my terminal server. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
