Downgrade mkinitrd to 2.4-34.3.1 (still available in the repos) and after it reinstall your kernel package. I am still waiting for the update to appear in the repos. Installing mkinitrd from your repository does not itself fix the problem, presumably because mkinitrd isn't rerun automatically? Re-installing the kernel as per Ronny Peine's suggestion afterwards does the trick; the system is then booting properly.
