https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=457026 User pablo@blueoakdb.com added comment https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=457026#c1 Summary: knetworkmanager doesn't disabled wired connection when connected and other bugs Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: RC 1 Platform: i386 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE3 AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: pablo@blueoakdb.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Hi, My laptop has two NIC's: a wired and wireless card. In my office, I have an Ethernet cable and an AP. To start fresh, I've removed ~/.kde/share/config/knetworkmanagerrc $ rpm -qf `which knetworkmanager` NetworkManager-kde-0.7r848570-25.1 Bug #1 ====== If I'm on my wireless card and connect my Ethernet cable, I auto-switch to my cable. When I configured the Ethernet NIC, I did not select `Autoconnect' Bug #2 ====== While my wired NIC is connected to a cable, knetworkmanager refuses to allow me to switch to my wireless connection. Even if I `Deactivate connection', I remain on my wired NIC. Bug #3 ====== knetworkmanager loses which NIC I'm on. If I disable the wired connection, it thinks it's disabled but because of Bug #2, I'm still on my wired NIC. knetworkmanager reports the connection is not available. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If I'm on my wireless card and connect my Ethernet cable, I auto-switch to my cable. When I configured the Ethernet NIC, I did not select `Autoconnect'
That's maybe NM. It sets the ethernet up even if no connection is defined. Tambet, any idea?
While my wired NIC is connected to a cable, knetworkmanager refuses to allow me to switch to my wireless connection. Even if I `Deactivate connection', I remain on my wired NIC.
If you activate wireless while connected to a wired connection the wired connection won't be brought done resulting in a wired and a wireless connection at the same time. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If you activate wireless while connected to a wired connection the wired connection won't be brought done resulting in a wired and a wireless connection at the same time. --- Shouldn't the user be warned or something? It's seems awkward at the very least that the above happens.
That's intended behavior introduced in NetworkManager 0.7. Closing as WONTFIX. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

What a horrible piece of code. Intended behavior? I upgraded my laptop from 11.0 to 11.1 RC1 and many things, including NetworkManager are broken. With the above attitude of (intended behavior for crappy software, and software which has regressed from 11.0), I don't see any reason for me to continue with openSUSE and help test. Thank you for making my decision obvious. Time to switch distro's. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This decision was made upstream, not only for OpenSUSE.
I upgraded my laptop from 11.0 to 11.1 RC1 and many things, including NetworkManager are broken.
What exactly is broken (in regard to NM) except the changed behavior?
With the above attitude of (intended behavior for crappy software, and software which has regressed from 11.0), I don't see any reason for me to continue with openSUSE and help test.
I appreciate any reported bug but in this case we have no possibility to fix this issue as it would mean a fundamental change to NM. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Please re-read my three points and see how it's utterly confusing to have NetworkManager behave as it is doing.
I understand why it is confusing for the regular user. However, when NetworkManager was only able to configure one device (0.6.x) at the same time a lot of people complained. Now, NetworkManager is able to activate multiple devices at the same time and people complain too. The only possible solution (however, not for 11.1) I see here is to make this behavior configurable. Tambet, did you and Dan discuss something like this already? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Yes, you are right, ubuntu does get it, and they do not change that behavior. I'm sorry you don't.
Nice attitude. This pretty much seals the deal for me. I have been using openSUSE since 9.0 I worked hard at testing for 11.0. I even have a nice little thank you from the marketing manager. Nice to know a moronic attitude can turn off a user. Good luck with your distro and your attitude. I'm sure you'll get far. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
