[Bug 236153] New: After update to 10.2, Umlauts need multiple key presses
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=236153 Summary: After update to 10.2, Umlauts need multiple key presses Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: RC 5 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Update Problems AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: poeml@novell.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com CC: mls@novell.com After updating to 10.2, Umlauts are broken somehow. I need to press the respective key multiple times until the character appears on screen. For example, for ä I need to press the key 3 times, for ö 4 times, and so on. (Note, these are not the exact numbers.) The character which ends up in the editor seems to be 'normal', e.g. a latex document with respective encoding built and printed just fine. This was observed in vim, in xterm as well as on the Linux virtual console. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

They couldn't be more different I think ;) A G3 powerbook, keyboard internally wired as ADB hardware. A nameless standard PC, keyboard type unknown but looks standard. I can look it up when I am in that office again, which will happen in two days. Furthermore, only one of the machines has been maintained by me (the powerbook). (I happily admit that I tend to break all kinds of funny assumptions that X or other folks make.) I don't believe in hardware error therefore. On the PC, mls was logged in. It might be useful to try with a different user being logged in there. The one is what was seen by Michael in xterm, caused by the locale not being set by KDM at start time, so xterm was not running in UTF8. This was probably caused by a old .xsession File. (The home having been updated since 7.2 or so.) The bug doesn't occur for a newly created user. The other bug is the one that I have been seeing. I was using gpm to cut and paste German umlauts inside vim. Locale is set for me, and gpm seems to be the thing in between which is broken / misacting. Now, the symptom of both bugs was the same: that you need multiple key presses to get a character on screen. This is presumably a funny workaround in vim for brokan locale settings. In a shell, for example, you'll get a character instantaneously (UTF8-replacement character!). Thus, the X problem is probably solved or not relevant, but the gpm (kernel?) bug remains. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

In tty: I selected German keyboard in yast. I set locales to "de_DE.UTF8" I run "gpm -m /dev/psaux -t ps2" I opened vi and wrote "ä" and "ö". Everything allright, I need only one press to write the umlaut. I also tried "en_GB.UTF-8" locale without any problem. I noticed that I failed to copy german umlauts with gpm in vim and also shell. But this is another bug. Please, could you write more information to reproduce the bug? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

But that is what I meant, I think. Typing the character works fine, but copy&pasting doesn't. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

In essence, shells can have their own problems, like zsh. It's probably wise to test with 'cat' instead. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
