[Bug 537056] New: copying files from DVD: drive makes a lot of noise (regression)
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=537056 Summary: copying files from DVD: drive makes a lot of noise (regression) Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Minor Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: bluedzins@wp.pl QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Situation (example): DVD with 10 files, 4.4GB total (disc is almost full). I am copying all those files to hard drive. At the end _after_ successful copying (i.e. copying is finished, no data transfer is on) drive makes terrible noise like something was cracking. Or lets put it this way -- it seems like there is 11th file and system tries to copy this file but there is a lot of errors, and that the cause of all the noise. It is not a silly complain, but this kind of noise (you can't tell the difference from real error) is unnerving, because when copying such amount of data I usually work, so every time copying is done, I got nervous that copying failed. I am afraid what can be the effect on drive life and mechanics, so I am setting this report as a bug. The second reason is, this is a clear regression. I tested opensuse 10.3 and all the noise was was "woosh" from the spinning disc, nothing else. I think it is related to this issue: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=467174 but of course I am judging basing on superficial facts -- the kind of noise and the fact of reading data near the end of the disc. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It might be that we started to do some readahead and that gives troubles to the drive. What's the value of /sys/block/<device>/queue/read_ahead_kb in 10.3 and 11.1?
The value is the same: 128.
Also it would be useful to find out what exactly triggers the noise... Is it reading any particular file (not exactly the last one)?
No, not the last -- all files. The last one has to be big. Naive analogy -- with runner speeding up, with enough distance to speed up it is harder to stop then.
Or how long after copying does the sound appear?
Immediately.
Maybe you could try running blktrace just after the copying finished (or during the end of it) so that we can see whether kernel sends some commands to the drive which make the noise or what.
I will do it, I just need to find out how to use it. Also I test 11.2 but I have to wait for another pendrive (one I keep solely for 10.3 for testing). -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
