[Bug 264228] New: nspluginwrapper + java plugin problems
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=264228 Summary: nspluginwrapper + java plugin problems Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 3 Platform: 64bit OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Firefox AssignedTo: bnc-team-mozilla@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: martin.schlander@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de It's very nice to have 64bit Firefox. But from personal testing and confirmed by googling it appears that nspluginwrapper doesn't support 32bit java plugins. I think Java web plugin is pretty critical. At least in Denmark maybe ~90% of users or so will need it for home banking. I just assume home banking in most other countries requires Java plugin too. . when will SUN liberate that stuff, or at least release a 64bit plugin, and stop being a bottleneck for progress. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Therefore I was pretty surprised to read that Firefox is 64bit now. Reassigning to TPM for decision. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Will Sun Java 1.6 have a working plugin for x86-64 firefox? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=264228 ------- Comment #3 from wolfgang@rosenauer.org 2007-04-16 23:58 MST ------- Googling around I found that some people suggest GCJ's plugin which is shipped in classpath-webplugin. I've tried that on 10.2 and it seems to load and also pops up annoying security warnings about the trust level but I haven't seen a working applet so far. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=264228 ------- Comment #4 from martin.schlander@gmail.com 2007-04-17 02:00 MST ------- Don't think homebanking will work with GCJ. Judging by all the Debian and Fedora users that have problems in this area in forums ;-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=264228 ------- Comment #5 from aj@novell.com 2007-04-17 02:54 MST ------- This is really sad :-( and means we might have to go back to the 32-bit i386 Firefox for x86-64. Daniel, do you have any better ideas? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Ok, I'll shortly answer the questions: - No: Java 6 will not contain 64bit plugin - It will be opened with Java 7, but will be among the last parts to be opened as it contains third level code and SUN needs some time to find a solution for it - gcj's plugin does not work properly ... it's on the distri (classpath-webplugin) but we should probably drop that as long as it does not work properly - konqueror works differently and can to some extend Applets without the plugin component. @Martin: perhaps you could try that out (I don't have a x86_64 machine at hand at the moment): Enable Java in konqueror: - open Konqueror - Settings>configure Konq>. - click the Java & JavaScript tab. - in the path to java executable, or ‘java’: box enter /usr/lib64/jvm/jre/bin/java and check all radio buttons - close all active Konqueror windows. - restart Konqueror - go to http://www.uni-koeln.de/rrzk/multimedia/plugintest/java/index.html and test whether that plugin works ... you usually have to wait a little bit or perhaps hit the reload button. In the bottom right corner you should see the Java icon - if that works, try out other java pages that you need from time to time - I will test that in the next days as well Cheers, Daniel -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I always got the applets trying to load, I got the java-icon on the bottom right, but no luck. I also tried /usr/lib64/jvm/jre-1.5.0-sun/bin/java as an alternative path. No luck.
