[Bug 228836] New: Kernel oops upon change of CPU frequency
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=228836 Summary: Kernel oops upon change of CPU frequency Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: x86 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: fred.blaise@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de CC: hmacht@novell.com I am have a strong feeling that whenever my CPU frequency is dynamically adjusted, my computer just locks up, totally at random times. It can happen 3 times a day, 1, whatever... rarely none. This has happened on 2 laptops of mine (a Dell inspiron, and Lenovo T60). The reason why I think that: if I perform a 'powersave -l' to force the CPU frequency down, then I never occured a single lockup on any laptop. Here is some info about my Lenovo T60: `--> ps -elf |grep powers 1 S root 3632 1 0 75 0 - 1108 - 12:21 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/powersaved -d -f /var/run/acpid.socket -v 3 `--> ps -elf |grep cpufreq 0 S root 3603 3031 0 76 0 - 755 - 12:21 ? 00:00:00 /usr/lib/hal/hald-addon-cpufreq `--> lsmod |grep speed speedstep_centrino 12832 2 freq_table 8832 1 speedstep_centrino processor 34664 2 speedstep_centrino,thermal I have tried to do a sysrq to get dumps of tasks and such, but it is not responding at all when I press the keys... :/ Please let me know what I could do to debug this. Thanks. Do both of these support deeper sleep states (C3 or deeper), you can check in cat /proc/acpi/processor/*/power. Are these both Dual Core machines? I wrote a little script to check cpufreq performance, it's located here: ftp.suse.com/pub/people/trenn/cpufreq_check_performance/ You need both scripts and you need to adjust: CPUFREQ_CHECK_BIN=~trenn/bin/cpufreq_check_performance.sh in cpufreq_check.sh to wherever you copied the other one. Not sure whether it works out of the box, I didn't use it for a long time. Does it trigger the hang? Also check for BIOS updates, this could also be some OS unrelated microcode problem. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=228836 ------- Comment #2 from venkatesh.pallipadi@intel.com 2007-01-11 18:09 MST ------- I havent heard any such freeze issues before coming from cpufreq. I feel this is not related to cpufreq. Can you please try disabling cpufreq (running performance governor all the time) and check whether you still see freezes.. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I ran the performance governor all the time, no freeze. To Thomas: Sorry, haven't had the time to test it yet. I must say that this occured most of my dell laptop, which just litteraly fried a few days ago (motherboard, CPU??), and that this hasn't occured on my t60 for quite some time now. The Dell was hyperthreaded CPU, and the t60 is a dual centrino. C3 or deeper is supported on the t60. If this my problem doesn't occur again by january's end, I will close the bug and reopen if necessary. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
