YaST2 backs up the partition table of the first one, skipping the second one (which is only referred to by an encrypted swap partition and an LVM container - that means: it's nowhere mentioned in /etc/fstab or /proc/mounts). In replacement, YaST2 writes several partition tables of external hard disks, which is of no use. As you can see, sfdisk -d /dev/sdb results in "No medium found" which is kind of surprising. Apparently, the former sdb has been attached as sde, while the naming of the cr_sdb1 enrcrypted swap partition remained the same. This is a bit saddening, since mixing two device naming conventions is never a good idea, and it's quite confusing. (Installation procedure vs. real life.) I use this kernel: kernel-desktop-3.1.10-1.9.1.x86_64. What about using the mountpoint? I changed the name to cr_home (for /home) on my system. If you use encrypted physical volumes for LVM there are entries in /etc/crypttab, but no corresponding entries in /etc/fstab. And in this example, what to do with swap? Here there are two encrypted swap partitions and /etc/crypttab is: ------------------------------------------------ cr_sda5 /dev/disk/by-id/ata-WDC_WD10EARS-00Y5B1_WD-WCAV5L733106-part5 /dev/urandom swap cr_sdb1 /dev/disk/by-id/ata-WDC_WD10EARS-00MVWB0_WD-WMAZ20392365-part1 /dev/urandom swap ------------------------------------------------ so one would need to use cr_swap_1 and cr_swap_2 which also could cause confusion if e.g. cr_swap_1 gets removed later. In addition I prefer the name having a relation to the underlying device, since the existence of the dm map imposes certain restrictions on the underlying device (e.g. partitions cannot be removed, LVs cannot be changed) therefore I prefer that the name of dm map somehow points to the device. In the end it is just a identifier. I don't remember how they achieve it, but it's possible to fill sda,sdb,sdc tightly with fixed disks first (SystemRescueCD does so), or ordered by (S)ATA controller skipping unconnected ports, or way like the desktop OpenSUSE kernel does now. Anyway, the OpenSUSE installer does it rather intuitively, and the live kernel does differently, which is confusing.
