However, I've upgraded mc to 4.8.3 in a branch[0], and it does not exhibit the bug. Two possibilities: we could cherry-pick the fixes from 4.8.3 and backport them to 4.8.1.3, or update to 4.8.3. I've been testing it somewhat and found no trouble with my usual workflow - everyone's welcome to try it off my branch (I'll keep it stable until this closes).
