It isn't necessary exposing /boot as this is supposed to be grub's handywork [...] However, the kernel installer rpm script will fail silently when trying to write vmlinuz into /boot as well as it fails at adding corresponding grub/menu.lst entries. The script will tell you that /boot/vmlinuz* was correctly installed but it is not. I am no expert here but I, personally, suggest testing against fstab and mtab whether or not a /boot partition is clean and mounted with read-write privileges so that this block can be avoided. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Do not mount /boot or have it mounted read-only... Actual Results: The script shows grub/menu.lst entries and /boot/vmlinuz* as correctly written but they are not. In general, if you set bootloader to NONE (meaning you don't want kernel install update bootloader configuration), you don't have any way to detect the problem. When I don't mount /boot then warning is showed and installation fail. If I mount read-only /boot then it fail as RPM - error unpacking archive failed on file /boot/target.map... What is exact version of installed kernel, perl-Bootloader and exact way how to reproduce it? Both of them have a custom sysinit (minit) if it is of any relevance... But all the corresponding partitions are mountable through fstab and mstab status is OK so it shouldn't affect another programs. Though, don't you think it is better if perl-Bootloader can detect this not so peculiar case and try _mounting rw_ whatever the boot partition is instead of rising immediately an error as for the second case? IMHO _Automated updates_ would be easier and safer that way. And it works, in attached screenshot is result if /boot is mounted as read-only (/proc/mounts included). I post another screenshot where is demonstated perl-Bootloader fail if boot is umounted.
