[Bug 223576] New: Grub installation is broken after update
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=223576 Summary: Grub installation is broken after update Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: RC 1 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: amantia@kde.org QAContact: jsrain@novell.com I updated beta2 to rc1 with Yast-System update. After the reboot the new Kernel-2.6.18.2-23-default was booted automatically and resulted in an instant File not found error. I selected my old grub entry for suse beta2, and it booted but as all my modules from the old kernel were already deleted, it for example couldn't even mount the boot partition (which was an ext2 one). After some recovery attempt, I found the problem: grub somehow mixed my hard disks. I have one at /dev/hda1 (it has SUSE 10.2 beta1 and of course grub as well), and /dev/sda1. The first was supposed to be hd0, the second hd1, still the entries were not correct and hd1 tried to boot from the /dev/hda1, not /dev/sda1, resulting in an error not finding the kernel. As my old entry refered to the /vmlinuz link, it was working with the kernel from my other disk. ;-) So something is broken there. I attach 3 version of grub files: the beta2 one, the rc1 one which was not working, and what I use now (rc1-working). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

And I did a grub-install /dev/sda1 after fixing my files, just for sure. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

What I'm wondering about is: somehow the ordering of your disks changed. on beta2 you had hda as first disk (BIOS 0x80) and sda as BIOS 0x81, which was the same in RC1. After you changed this order it worked again. Did you change anything between beta2 and RC1, eg BIOS update, change of boot order in the BIOS? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=223576 ------- Comment #6 from amantia@kde.org 2006-11-27 10:11 MST ------- I didn't change anything between beta2 and rc1 on my system. There was a change before beta2 though: beta1 (and previously 10.1) was on /dev/hda. I had a /dev/sda disk which I replaced with a completely new one and installed beta2 on it. At this stage I changed the boot order to boot from this disk instead of my old one. It worked fine until updating to rc1 as described above. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=223576 ------- Comment #7 from volker3204@paradise.net.nz 2006-11-30 12:47 MST ------- I am seeing the same symptoms on a fresh install of RC1 with only one hard disk. After the test kernel update, grub/menu.lst looks like default 5 title openSUSE 10.2 root (hd0,1) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18.2-23-default root=/dev/hda2 vga=0x333 resume= /dev/hda1 splash=silent showopts initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.18.2-23-default title Kernel-2.6.18.2-33-default root (hd0,1) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18.2-33-default root=/dev/hda2 vga=0x333 resume=/de v/hda1 splash=silent showopts initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.18.2-33-default The new kernel should be at the top, the old one should have the version in its title and be at the end. It defaults to the last entry, which is for the xen kernel. Problem 1: the old kernel, top of the grub menu, was removed by the new kernel rpm installation. Selecting this gives a grub error. Problem 2: the boot default is now the xen kernel. It should be the default kernel, or whatever was default before. Problem 3: Although the xen kernel is installed, booting it gives the same grub error "boot file not found". The entry in menu.lst is bogus, missing most of the string. This bug is perhaps not a blocker, but should be fixed before the first kernel update or SUSE won't lose its current low package management reputation :( # rpm -qa --last|head kernel-xen-2.6.18.2-33 Thu 30 Nov 2006 21:55:38 NZDT kernel-default-2.6.18.2-33 Thu 30 Nov 2006 21:53:44 NZDT opensuse-updater-0.4-29 Thu 30 Nov 2006 21:46:12 NZDT zypper-0.6.13-5 Thu 30 Nov 2006 21:46:07 NZDT yast2-qt-2.14.3-4 Thu 30 Nov 2006 21:46:04 NZDT yast2-pkg-bindings-2.14.4-4 Thu 30 Nov 2006 21:46:00 NZDT yast2-perl-bindings-2.14.0-8 Thu 30 Nov 2006 21:45:57 NZDT yast2-ncurses-2.14.4-3 Thu 30 Nov 2006 21:45:56 NZDT libzypp-2.9.1-3 Thu 30 Nov 2006 21:45:38 NZDT yast2-tune-2.14.0-9 Sat 25 Nov 2006 23:46:52 NZDT -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
